So what’s a holiday on Lampedusa like?
Well lets start with the main attractions sun sea white beaches turtles dolphins and fish.
We have two national parks , one nearly half the length of the south coast which includes the famous rabbit beach.
La Roccia holiday village overlooks and is adjoined to this nature reserve and people staying with us can easily enjoy the prehistoric canyon and undiscovered
beach of
Cala Galera right next door. The other is the newer marine park a short bus ride away on the beautiful rocky east coast of the island near Cala Creta. Both well worth a visit .
The most famous attraction is the amazing Rabbit beach which on a trip to Lampedusa cannot be missed . Other places to visit are Cala Pulcino falcons wheeling overhead as you walk down another rocky canyon reminiscent of
Australia to find the splendid turquoise cove at the bottom. The turtle recooperation centre can be visited most evenings and nearly always have some turtles to see. Yet another whole day must be dedicated to a round the island boat trip which we organise daily , another trip can also be to the next door
island of
Linosa completely different to Lampedusa. Other days you can spend your time if you like out dolphin watching animals which are seen frequently around the island , or turtles which also are often seen popping their heads up to watch you. In early spring more rarely we have the passage of whales gong past. Then there is fishing for which we organise daily fishing trips with our own specialised boat and captain , For others we have a diving centre which sometimes offers trips to Lampione where they say the diving is fantastic. Your remaining days can be spent on the other two or three beaches Cala Croce and Cala Giutgia very good for little ones and they are easier to get to, they are still white fine sand and turquoise water.
The island in all has a strange prehistoric feel to it , the limestone is full of fossils and as it drifted apart from any other land mass very early in its history it has a feeling of uniqueness. In fact some of the flora and forna found here is found only on Lampedusa. For example the two types of snakes we have (non poisonous and also very rare I,ve lived here over twenty years and only seen the one sort but I,m told there does exist another) are unique in their evolution. We also have at least one unique type of plant and a particular sort of snail that only exists here.
Lampedusa not only reminds one of Australia but it actually is like
Australia . It has a very similar history to
Australia but the convicts sent were Italian . The climate is also similar and the fact that it drifted apart from any other land mass creating its own unique habitat is the same . The biggest difference between
Australia and Lampedusa is as one is enormous the other is miniature. Lampedusa is indeed very very small.
For your accommodation Villaggio Camping
La Roccia is ideal, not only for its situation on the South coast with its own small beach Cala Greca but also because the family Gibilsco has built and run it with love and passion for over thirty years.
